Polar Opposites

March 30, 2008 at 8:56 pm (media related)

So, it’s Sunday night. And that means that two of my favorite shows are on – Big Brother and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Due to the NCAA Tournament, Big Brother got bumped back a bit in time. So, I flipped back to ABC and the new Big Give (sponsored by Oprah) was on. As I changed back and forth between the two shows it became thoroughly obvious how terribly opposite these shows are.

In Big Brother, the contestants are competing to earn themselves $500k. It’s all about them. They will lie, deceive, back stab, or whatever else it takes to win the money. It’s a game. I guess it is to be expected. Within just those confines, it seems totally acceptable.

However, one button push away, is this show where a small group of people are travelling around the country in a different competition. How much can they give away to others? The show pits contestants against each other in trying to give away as much as they possibly can. They are given a bit of money for each step of the path. However, the contestants know a) how to make that money stretch and b) how to give of themselves and listen to others to help them out.

It’s just interesting to me how these two shows are on at nearly the same time. Two shows, both costing thousands of dollars to make, that are so completely different.

I hope that I can put myself more in the Big Give camp.

Crowder Post-Show Review

March 28, 2008 at 7:06 pm (life happenings, media related)

Yesterday, the David Crowder Band played Metropolitan Park here in Jacksonville. It was a beautiful day for a concert in late March.

Alive Audio, co-owned by Access‘ own Beau Brown and Darin Peckham, had the contract for the technical side of the show. Beau asked me a while ago to perform the stage managing side of things. This basically entails being the mean guy that tells people when they can and cannot be on stage. It’s not too bad.

The bands were good. The company, mostly Access production people and staff were great. The YWAM Jax crew was phenomenal. My hats go off to them.

The day got a bit of a late start (as most festivals do). Either way, we got to DC*B’s sound check on time. I’ve worked with many bands through the years. I have to say that this was one of the most laid back sound checks. Time was a little tight and they were done very early.

The show came off with little hitches. I think the biggest was that Crowder’s Guitar Hero modified guitar wouldn’t quite work. Of course it was great in sound check and perfectly fine after the show. However, when it counted, the duct tape contraption wouldn’t quite hold. Oh, well.

First Easter

March 23, 2008 at 6:17 pm (church)

Today was Access’s first Easter Sunday. God is alive and well.

I was way more prepared than I imagined I would be especially considering this was our first back-to-back weeks service. It was almost to the point of scary. I kept waiting for something big to go wrong.

We definitely took some creative risks today, but God led us through the process and worked it all out. We held our doors a little longer than normal today. We let the crowd grow in our lobby until just before start time.

They entered to a dark room, a video of the cross, and the band playing almost ominous music. We then used the simple white text over black screen to take people back to the first Easter Sunday morning. That led into the moment of the morning - one that God used us all to arrive at over the last few weeks.
JohnnySwim led us through Phil Wickham’s “True Love (iTunes | YouTube).” This was accented by a video I found that was a near last attempt at a pre-packaged deal. My team helped to create a moment I’ve never experienced on Easter.

We hit the bridge: lights came up, video goes to white. Lyrics: “That’s not the end of the story. Jesus is alive. He rose!”     The crowd cheered both hours. It was a great moment of God being glorified! I watched this whole deal get pieced together. It was an incredible moment that we are all afraid to take any credit for.

Andy’s message was absolutely a knock out of the park. His ability to revisit a story that we have heard time and time again and make it fresh is simply remarkable. The last first I can think of was the invitation at the end. The kingdom grew today. It was overwhelming.

He is risen and moving. Thanks for letting me have a small tiny part in Your grand story, God.

Good Friday

March 21, 2008 at 11:25 pm (life happenings)

Tonight, our staff gathered together to watch “The Passion of the Christ.” If you’ve not seen this movie, it’s great. Yes some things could be different, but wow. What a reminder of what Christ had to suffer. We followed up with communion. It was just a great time of fellowship and remembrance as a staff.

Before getting into that mode, I had just finished a video for Sunday. The opener at Access is gonna be pretty sweet. I’m not gonna give it all away, but definitely be on time.

Having been editing right before all of this, my mindset was more on what is left to come. Easter for me this year is focusing so much on the resurrection. Don’t get me wrong, the cross is TOTALLY apart of that. Without the cross, we don’t get to Easter Sunday. Without today, Good Friday, there would be no death, no suffering. This had to come. Jesus had to die. There was no way around it. He even asks for a way out. He had the power to stop it at any time.

I wonder what was going through his head from Thursday on. He knew without a shadow of a doubt that Sunday would come. The story would finish - his way.

Hope died on that Friday. Gibson does a magnificent job of showing the despair of those closest to Jesus. One of the closing shots of the film is Jesus’ body being removed from the cross. Mary, his mother, holds this lifeless body with a face that is simply haunting. All is lost. They have been defeated.

Then comes Sunday. See you then!
